Bruinvis (sometimes written Bruynvis or Bruinvisch), a Mennonite family of Alkmaar (Dutch province of North Holland), many of whom served the Mennonite congregation at Alkmaar as deacons. A Pieter Bruynvis was deacon of the Flemish and Waterlander congregation in 1720 and treasurer 1721-1723 and 1727. Most members of this family, however, belonged to the Frisian congregation at Alkmaar. The first Bruynvis listed in the records of this church is Jan Bruynvis, baptized 18 March 1731. He was a deacon in 1756 and died 20 June 1766. His son Cornelis Bruinvis (30 May 1736 to 6 March 1810 served after 1 April 1778 as a deacon and for many years as president of the church board. He prepared the union of the two Alkmaar congregations in 1810. He was the author of a paper (in Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1880, 48 pp.) on the Mennonites at Alkmaar. Pieter Bruynvis (6 March 1744 to 14 October 1814), a brother of this Cornelis, was also a deacon at about the same time and 1778-1810 served the Frisian congregation and 1810-1814 the United congregation. Further we find the following members of this family, all deacons and almost all for a long period of years: Pieter Bruynvis, Czn. (1764-1842), was deacon 1810-1842; Jan Bruynvis, 1813-1816; Cornelis Voorhout Bruynvis, 1816-1842; Cornelis Bruynvis, 1820-1837; Cornelis Pieter Bruynvis (1827-1873) a deacon; Jacobus Bruynvis, 1842-1871; Hendrik Jacobus Bruynvis, 1859-1894; Cornelis Willem Bruinvis 1881-1896 (d. 1922). The regency of the Gerrit Wildeman old people's home was for almost two centuries from generation to generation in the Bruynvis family.
