Loppersum is a town in the Dutch province of Groningen, formerly the seat of a Mennonite congregation. Soon after 1530 Anabaptism is said to have had adherents at Loppersum. In 1557-1561 Leenaert Bouwens baptized some persons here (4 or 7, the exact number could not be ascertained). About 1569 the Mennonites living at Loppersum and surrounding towns were severely molested by the district governor Imel van Lotteling, who planned to obtain their property by having it confiscated. Shortly after 1584 they suffered much under de Mepsche, provost of Loppersum, but it seems that no one lost his life. In the 17th century a congregation of Groningen Old Flemish existed here. The names of its preachers have come down from about 1680; they all were untrained and mostly farmers. In 1659 a meeting of Groningen Old Flemish leaders was held at Loppersum, where a statement was drawn up concerning clothing, furniture, etc., which the members of the Old Flemish congregations were allowed to have. (This statement is found in Blaupot ten Cate, Friesland, 307 f.) In the 18th century the congregation became very small: 1710 about 50 members and in 1754, 17 members. In 1783 it merged with the congregation of Leermens, forming the Leermens-Loppersum congregation. For the history of the united congregation, see Leermens. Of a meetinghouse of Loppersum nothing is known; the members presumably met in private homes. Now the meetinghouse of the congregation of Leermens-Loppersum is at Zeerijp.
