Alexander Heinrich Detmer was chief librarian at Münster in Westphalia and a research scholar in history, who rendered valuable service to Mennonite history in a series of articles on the Anabaptistdisorders in Münster. Of great importance is his publication of the source book by Hermann von Kerssenbroich, Anabaptistici furoris Monasterium inclitam Westphaliae metropolim evertentis historica narratio (in Geschichtsquellen des Bistums Münster, 1899-1900). His extensive introduction to the book also appeared separately under the title, Hermann von Kerssenbroichs Leben und Schriften (Münster, 1900).

Other works in this field showing his thorough mastery of the material are (1) Bilder aus den religiösen und sozialen Unruhen in Münster während des 16. August 1533. Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte Bernhard Rothmanns und des sozialen Anabaptismus.

Of his critical edition of the historical works of Hermann Hamelmann only the first two numbers appeared, 1902-1905 (Veröffentlichungen derhistorischen Kommission für Westfalen). The book, Zwei Schriften des Münsterischen Wiedertäufers Bernhard Rothmann, edited by Detmer and Robert Krumbholtz, with an introduction on contemporary conditions, was published posthumously in Dordrecht, 1904.
