The SunWest Christian Fellowship in Calgary, Alberta began services in 1994. Willy and Gwen Reimer are considered the founding leaders of the group. The congregation originated from outreach by the Alberta Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches Church Extension Commission. SunWest joined the Alberta MB Conference in March 1996. At that time it had grown from a core group of 35 to an attendance that averaged 140.
By 1999, the average weekly attendance had increased to 450 in two Sunday morning services, and membership was 79. In 2005 the church averaged 700 attendees. In 2006 the congregation started a multi-site initiative where one congregation met at two different locations.
