Hans Madlinger, an Anabaptist martyr of Haflingen in the canton of Basel, Switzerland, and his wealthy brother Ulrich, were among the first Anabaptists in Basel. Hans probably took part in the third disputation in Basel on 29 December 1529, was arrested, "lay in prison over ten weeks and also had to suffer torture until he recanted" in 1530. But he returned to the Anabaptists and in December 1530 recanted a second time. In January 1531 he was arrested again as a backslider, was submerged three times, and because he would not leave the country, was drowned in a brook at the Homburg castle on 10 February 1531, with Peter Linggscher. Both Hans and Ulrich (Uli) were peasants.
