Johann P. Wiebe was a Mennonite teacher who came to Canada with his parents Jacob Wiebe (1835-1914) and Katherina Penner (1837-1876) in 1875, at the age of 16. After leaving South Russia, where Johann was born 5 May 1862 in the Bergthal Colony, they arrived in Quebec City on 18 June. From there they traveled west and eventually settled in the village of Bergfeld on the East Reserve in Manitoba. Here his father became the first teacher and raised his family. Johann was the third of ten children and had an additional seven half-siblings from his father's second marriage. On 1 November 1885, Johann married his first wife, Helena Toews (1864-1905). Together they had ten children. Sadly, seven of these died as infants. After Helena's death in 1905, Johann married Gertrude Esau (1878-?), who was the widow of Johann Heinrichs. She had a son and a daughter from her first marriage, and together she and Johann had a son, Gerhard, in 1907 and a stillborn child in 1913.
Johann P. Wiebe, like his father, became a teacher. His first recorded teaching post was in Burwalde, on the East Reserve in Manitoba. In 1902 he was teaching in Neu-Bergfeld and in 1910 he was teaching in Grunthal. Johann P. Wiebe died 4 October 1922 after dedicating the better part of his life to the education of the children in the Mennonite communities in which he lived.
