Heinrich Müller of Meisterschwanden, an Anabaptist martyr, also known as Heinrich Sumer, organized an emigration of Swiss Mennonites to Moravia, was chosen preacher there in 1581, was seized in Zurzach, Switzerland, in 1582 with Jakob Mändl, taken to the town of Baden, and cross-examined there in the courthouse in the presence of a large crowd of spectators. All attempts to convert them having failed, they were sentenced to die by drowning. On the way to the site of execution "they spoke cheerfully to the crowd admonishing them to repent and be converted from their sinful life to God. They sang together joyfully . . . lifting their voices in lovely melody and praise to God. They sang so harmoniously that the multitude . . . marveled." Mändl was drowned first; another effort was made to convert Müller, but he rejected it and died. Three songs were written upon their death.
