Gielis van Aerde, an Anabaptist martyr, born at Lier (Belgium), was taken prisoner together with Govert Mertens, Marie Vlaminx, and Tanneken van Roosbroecke. After a severe cross-examination on the rack, in which he publicly confessed his faith, he was hanged and burned at Lier on 31 January 1551 (not 1550; see Offer 569, note).
