Herr is a Mennonite family coming originally from St. Gallen, Switzerland. They were in the group that emigrated from the Palatinate to Lampeter, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Hans Herr, the patriarchal pioneer who died in 1725, had a family of six boys and a daughter. The Herr Genealogy (1908) lists over 13,000 descendants of Hans Herr, naming as ministers not only Hans and his son Christian, but also as bishops—Christian, two Johns, and Benjamin; preachers—Amos, Christian, and Jacob (of Cumberland County), Christian S., Frank M., and Emory H., as well as numerous deacons and outstanding farmers. John Herr (1782-1850) founded the Reformed Mennonite Church.
