Harm(en) Scholtens (2 May 1703-1774): a minister of the Groningen Old Flemish Mennonite congregation at Groningen, Netherlands. In 1738 he was appointed preacher, in 1755 elder (later called opziener). Like other elders of this denomination he paid an annual visit to all congregations in his district. In 1766, accompanied by other elders, he negotiated at Amsterdam concerning a merger of the Groningen Old Flemish group and the Zonists, but this union did not come into being because most of the Old Flemish congregations opposed it. Scholtens did much in behalf of the oppressed Mennonites in West Prussia. Though co-operating with the (general) Dutch Committee of Foreign Needs at Amsterdam, the Old Flemish also organized a special relief action of their own, particularly for the (Old Flemish) congregations of Przechovka and Brenkenhoffswalde in 1766. Scholtens was the soul of this action. He also acted as an intermediary between the Amsterdam Committee of Foreign Needs and the Swiss Mennonites who had settled near Groningen and Sappemeer.
