Moritz Kessler, an Anabaptist martyr, is no doubt identical with "a tinker from the Emmental" in Switzerland. Moritz was a native of Sumiswald, and is frequently mentioned in the court records of the Emmental. On 12 October 1532 he promised to desist from Anabaptism, but did not keep his promise, and was expelled with his family in February 1533 for perjury. Two years later he returned to Bern and was put to death in the first half of 1535. The record of the wages paid the sexton uses the words, "to bury Kessler, who was executed." Kessler's wife returned to the state church and had her child baptized on 1 April 1535. But later she again joined the Anabaptists and was banished with her children.
