Martin Burkhard, an Anabaptist martyr, was one of the leaders (Vorsteher) of the congregation at Kaufbeuren who were chosen during the week of Augustin Bader's visit early in 1528. He was a victim of the cruel persecution, which broke with annihilating violence over the young church, making a permanent settlement of Anabaptists there impossible. On the morning of 13 June 1528 he was beheaded with three other leaders.
