Janneken, an Anabaptist martyr, who while in prison wrote the song "Verhuecht verblijt groot ende cleijn" (Be glad and rejoice, both ye great and small), found in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, 1563 and following editions, also Tweede Liedeboeck of 1583 and mentioned by Wolkan (Lieder, 62, 71). A notice in the margin of the page reports that the poet was a young woman called Janneken, who was drowned at the Steen castle at Antwerp. It is not clear which Janneken is meant, either Janneken van Aken (Jenneken Eghels) or Janneken van Houte. Probably it was the latter.
