Peter S. Hartman (1846-1934), the son of David and Elizabeth Burkholder Hartman, was a successful farmer, businessman, and lay church worker of Harrisonburg, Virginia. Though he at first opposed the Sunday-school movement, he later became an active leader and teacher in the Sunday school. He was the first solicitor for the Eastern Mennonite College and was one of its founders and ardent supporters. He was an enthusiastic speaker and the talk which appealed most to the students was entitled, "Reminiscences of the Civil War." Students knew him as "Uncle Pete." He served as a member of the General Mission Board for a number of years. He was a strong temperance advocate.
