David Friesen, the leader or Oberschulze of the Molotschna settlement, Ukraine, South Russia, in 1848-1865, the time of the struggle of the landless Mennonites of the settlement for recognition of their demands and for acquisition of land. Through their organization (see Landlosen-Kommission) and the support of the government they finally achieved their aim. David Friesen was a strong supporter of the landholding class, opposing the distribution of the surplus land among the landless.
