Emmen, a town (1947 population, 55,500, with 175 Mennonites; 2007 population, 108,863; coordinates: 52° 47' 0" N, 6° 53' 0" E) in the Dutch province of Drenthe. In 1879 there were about 100 Mennonites here, most of whom seem to have joined the Baptist Church which arose here at this time (Doopsgezinde Bijdragen  1894, 85). In 1939 the Mennonites living here, having held occasional meetings in the preceding years, organized a Mennonite fellowship (Kring). About 30 members joined. From 1942 the group met in a school building, then once a month in a room of the Reformed Church, and in 1956 in a rented hall. The membership in 1956 was 35; there was a Sunday school for the children (39 children). J. Meerburg Snarenberg, pastor of the Zwolle congregation, was in charge of this group.
