"Der Menonit" was a drama by Ernst von Wildenbruch (1845-1909), a superpatriotic German author, written in 1877. It has for its setting the Mennonites of East Prussia during the Wars of Liberation from Napoleon (1806-1813), and as its theme a young Mennonite's conflict between patriotic duty and conscience, loosely based on an actual incident in which a young Mennonite who had served in the army was refused membership in his congregation. The drama, poor in literary quality, shows not the least understanding of the position of the Mennonites, portraying them as self-centered and stupid egoists. The play reached the Mannheim stage in 1882. Mennonite reaction was prompt. Articles were published in a number of Mennonite journals, written by Mennonites such as H. van der Smissen and H. G. Mannhardt, and a letter by Wildenbruch written in reply to the protest by the consistory of the Danzig Mennonite Church was published in the Mennonitische Blätter.
