Pieter Klomp was born about 1760 and died 19 August 1832 at Groningen. He studied at the Mennonite Seminary at Amsterdam and became one of the outstanding ministers among the Dutch Mennonites of his time. He first served at Staveren 1784-1798; in 1798 he was called to the Groningen Old Flemish congregation in the city of Groningen. By his activity and his tolerant views he succeeded in achieving a union of his Old Flemish congregation with the Flemish-Waterlander congregation at Groningen in November 1809. It was Klomp, who on 10 December 1809 preached the first sermon for the united congregation. He also promoted the merging of the independent congregation of Swiss Mennonites of Groningen with the united congregation, which happened in 1824. Klomp, who in 1807 had been appointed commissaris (elder and leader) of the Conference of Groningen Old Flemish Mennonites, presided at the last meeting of this conference in 1815. In 1826 he became the moderator of the Groningen Sociëteit (Conference), founded in that year. Klomp served at Groningen until his death in 1832.
