Hannema, a Dutch Mennonite family of Harlingen, province of Friesland. This family, which has lived at Harlingen at least since 1530, became Mennonite in the 18th century, when Sjoerd Hannema (born 1721 at Midlum, died 1794 at Harlingen), founder of the Sjoerd Hannema Trading Company, was baptized upon confession of faith in the Harlingen Mennonite congregation on 30 January 1752, together with his wife Elisabeth Scheltema, whose father and grandfather were merchants and Mennonite preachers at Franeker. Sjoerd Hannema himself and many of his descendants served the church as deacons. Sjoerd Hannema, apparently a grandson of the above Sjoerd Hannema, was the (untrained) preacher (1800-08) of the small congregation of the Jan-Jacobsgezinden at Baard, Friesland; he died in February 1808.
