John Alexander Dowie, once a Congregational minister, was born at Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a pastor in Australia to 1878, and established the International Divine Healing Association at Melbourne in 1882, but moved to the United States in 1888. In 1893 he transferred to Chicago, in 1896 established the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church in Zion, and in 1901 founded Zion City on the shore of Lake Michigan, 42 miles (70 km) north of Chicago. Here he enjoyed immense power and influence, both through his professed "healing miracles" and his magnetic personality, and received large gifts from his followers. Unfortunately a number of Mennonites from central Illinois, including some of considerable wealth, were drawn into the ranks of his followers. He was deposed from his office as "general overseer" in 1905 and died in 1907.
