Peter Toews, Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Hanover, Manitoba, was born on 3 December 1839 in [[Bergthal Mennonite Settlement (Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Bergthal Colony]], South [[Russia|Russia]]. He was the fifth of 10 children born to Dietrich Toews (1806-1858) and Helena Rempel (1809-1865). Peter was baptized into the [[Bergthal Mennonites|Bergthaler Mennonite Church]] in Russia on 1 June 1859. In 1861 he married Agatha Kehler (1840-1886) and together they had eight children, nine of which survived to adulthood. In 1874 Peter and his family joined the large Mennonite [[Migrations|migration]] from Russia to [[Canada|Canada]] where they settled in Bergthal, Manitoba. After Agatha’s death in 1886, Peter married Sara Friesen (1836- ?). Peter Toews died on 27 March 1914.
