The Bankroetiers (Defaulters) were a small branch of Dutch Mennonites who separated in 1598 from the Huiskoopers or Old Flemish. Jacob Pieters van der Meulen, a leader of the Huiskoopers, did not think it necessary to excommunicate a brother for bankruptcy. Other leaders, especially Hans Busschaert, held the opposite view. The outcome was that van der Meulen was excommunicated with the debtor and his following. They formed a group known as the Bankroetiers. This group was, however, soon dissolved.
