Jan Evertsz van Wij of [[amsterdam-noord-holland-netherlands|Amsterdam]], an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr, was beheaded at Amsterdam on 31 December 1534. He had been baptized by [[Jacob van Campen (1505-1535)|Jacob van Campen]]after he had not attended the [[Roman Catholic Church|Catholic Church]] for a number of years. He was in prison for about six weeks. The city government tried to protect him from capital punishment, but they were apparently compelled by the Court of Holland to put him to death.
