Heyman Jacops van Ouderamstel was appointed sheriff of Amsterdam in February 1534, succeeding Jan Hubrechts, who had been a friend of the Anabaptists. He was ordered to adopt rigorous measures against the Anabaptists, but being unwilling to punish heretics and having been reproved on that account by the imperial stadholder, he soon withdrew from the office (October 1534). In 1535, being a burgomaster of the city, he protected the Anabaptists as much as he could. He is said to have been an Anabaptist himself, but this is an error.
