Eusebius Hershey was born near Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 14 August 1823. Converted at the age of 18, he joined the United Brethren Church and began to preach for them in 1842. After a few years he joined the Evangelical Mennonites, which later became a part of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church. He spent 43 years in evangelistic work mostly among non-Mennonites in the eastern part of the United States and Canada, making 13 trips to Canada.
