Cornelis wt den Briel (Pietersz), a Dutch Anabaptist, was a well-to-do shoemaker, one of the 12 apostles sent out by Jan Matthys in 1533. He preached and baptized in various places, including Leiden. Like Jacob van Campen he believed that armed attacks were wrong; but that did not prevent him from being an emissary of the revolutionary Jan van Geelen, and as such going to Leiden early in January 1534 to incite the brethren to buy weapons for the expedition to Münster. It seems that Cornelis left the Catholic Church before 1530, before the rise of Anabaptism in the Netherlands; with this group he united wholeheartedly. He was beheaded in The Hague in 1535.
