Henry F. Toews (17 February 1879-15 January 1942) was a Mennonite Brethren (MB) minister, educator, and author. He was born in South Russia, the son of Franz and Agnes (Klassen) Toews. Shortly after his birth the family immigrated to America, settling on a farm southwest of Moundridge, Kansas. Toews was converted and baptized at the age of fifteen. After attending Bethel College for one summer term, Toews then taught in country schools for four years. He continued his studies at McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas, where he received the AB degree. He received his theological training at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Rochester, NY, and at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kansas. The latter conferred upon him the BD degree. In 1918 McPherson College conferred upon him the DD degree.
Toews entered the ministry in 1905 and for several years did evangelistic work; he was ordained in 1914. Toews married Agnes Flaming on 9 August 1908, and established his home at Hillsboro, Kansas, where three children were born to them. From 1910 to 1940, except for a period of illness, he was engaged chiefly in teaching and for the greater part of this time he worked at Tabor College in the department of Theology and Bible. One year he taught at the Mennonite Brethren Bible School, Herbert, Saskatchewan.
Toews was very active in the MB Church conferences, serving as secretary of the General Conference 1924-1927. For some time he edited the Sunday School Quarterly and wrote the Sunday-school lesson helps for the Zionsbote and the Hillsboro Journal. He was the author of the following books written in German: Handbuch für Sonntag-schularbeiter, Biblische Grundwahrheiten, and Jesus kommt wieder. He also wrote Topical Outline Studies of Bible Doctrines. He died in his home at Hillsboro on 15 January 1942. Interment was in the local Mennonite Brethren cemetery.
