Elsie Drange Kaufman, the oldest of four children, was born 2 July 1886 to John and Amelia Sonderhoff Drange in Chicago, IL. Here she grew up and with other members of her family became Christians and members of the Mennonite church in 1898 through the ministry of Amos H. Leaman and Melinda Ebersole at the Chicago Home Mission (MC).

Elsie enrolled in the Goshen (Indiana) Academy to prepare for Christian service and was appointed in 1908 by the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities (Mennonite Church) for service in India. In 1909 Elsie married James Norman Kaufman who had gone to India in 1905. Together they served until 1934 in Dhamtari, where Elsie helped in the management of the orphanage for boys and working with the Bible women (lay evangelists). The Kaufmans had three children: Russel, Paul, and Kathryn.

In 1934 Elsie and her husband returned to the United States and lived in East Peoria, IL where Norman was pastor of the Pleasant Hill Mennonite Church. She died 13 November 1939.
