Christian Hoover was born near Pleasant Hall in [[Franklin County (Pennsylvania, USA)|Franklin County]], [[Pennsylvania (USA)|Pennsylvania]]. He was ordained a bishop in the River Brethren Church in 1834. About 1857 Christian separated from the main body of River Brethren ([[Brethren in Christ Church |Brethren in Christ]]) and helped organize the Lower District [[Old Order River Brethren|Old Order River Brethren]] congregation in Franklin County. He was the son of Heinrich and Maria (Wenger) Hoover. He married Christena Oberholser (1798-1840) and had ten children. One of Christian's sons, John (1819-1886), became a bishop in the Upper District Old Order River Brethren congregation in Franklin County. A large percentage of members among the Franklin County Old Order River Brethren are descended from Christian Hoover.
