Johannes Albertus Hoekstra, a Dutch Mennonite preacher, the son of Sjoerd Hoekstra and Maria Jans Valk, was born 28 June 1763 at Emden. He studied theology at the Mennonite seminary "de Zon" in Amsterdam; in 1784 he was called as pastor to the Edam church. He remained there until January 1786, served a year at Westzaan-Nord, then went to Utrecht, and in 1793 to Altona, Germany, where he remained until his death (7 December 1817). The funeral sermon delivered by J. Goos, and a booklet, Ter nagedachtenis van J. A. S. Hoekstra, by J. Schultz, both appeared in Altona in 1817. He was a member of the directorate of Tot Nut van't Algemeen.

A collection of sermons preached by J. A. Hoekstra and his father Sjoerd Hoekstra, Plegtige leerredenen te Emden en Utrecht, was published in Utrecht in 1790. He also wrote Leerredenen en bedestonden (Utrecht, 1787); Twee leeredenen bij den doop, en afscheid van Utrecht (Utrecht, 1793); Iets ter handhaaving en bevordering van waarheid en plicht (Altona, 1794); Iets over Gods grootheid (Altona, 1797); Dichtkundige menglingen (Amsterdam, 1800); Dank- und Ermahnungs-predigt (Altona, 1801); Jubelpredikatie wegens 25 jarige ambtsverrichting in onderscheiden Doopsgezinde gemeenten, gehouden te Altona am 8. October 1809 (Altona, 1809). In addition he published with G. Karsdorp and J. de Jager, Leerredenen. Met een vertoog, dat genade en plicht, de leer van Jesus en zijne apostelen, ook de leer van Menno en de waare Mennoniten is (Altona, 1794), and with G. Karsdorp, Stand- en Gedachtenisrede over Jan de Jager, Prediger zu Hamburg und Altona (1802) and with J. Goos, Ter gedachtenis van Gerrit Karsdorp, a preacher at Hamburg and Altona, who died on 11 October 1811.
