Johannes de Bakker (or Backer), (b. ca. 1645 at Burtscheid, Germany) was one of the delegates sent by the Amsterdam Lamist congregation in 1672 to the Palatine Mennonites to investigate their needs (Inv. Arch. Amst.). He became the preacher of the Toren Mennonite church in Amsterdam in 1673. In 1691 he was removed from office, but in 1695 resumed it. His removal from office is discussed in a booklet by H. Bouman, Korte en klaare aanwijsinge van de proceduren 1691, and a pamphlet, Relaas van t’geen is voorgevallen met Dr. J. de Bakker. He was a physician, zealously defended baptism by pouring, and opposed immersion. He wrote a brief discussion of baptism entitled Verscheide redenen, waerom het Overstorten beter voldoet als het onderdompelen (Several Reasons Why Pouring Is More Satisfactory Than Immersion) (1685, second edition 1687). Also published by him were: in 1707, Kort onderwijs van de christelijke gebeden waarachter de noodzakelijkheijd van den waterdoop; in 1712, Kort onderwijs om wel te predigen; without date, De moordenaer voor de Kruijciging bekeert; and in 1690, Aanmerkingen over het berigt van den kinderdoop door Balthasar Bekker. This last writing was directed to Pieter Frenken, preacher in Maastricht. Bakker was doubtless a competent preacher and possessed a well-rounded education.
