Gaaikema is a Dutch Mennonite family found in the province of Groningen. Nearly all of them were farmers. Johannes Harkes Gaaikema (1747-1825) and his son Luurt (1786-1848) lived in the hamlet of Gaaikemaweer near Niehove; both were deacons of the Humsterland Old Flemish congregation. To the same family belonged Luurt Luurts, a farmer and preacher (1738-1787) of the Old Flemish congregation of Houwerzijl, and also Tiete Popkes, a farmer at Oldehove, preacher 1721, and after 1732 elder of the Old Flemish congregation of Humsterland. Tiete Popkes died in 1773. His grandson Tiete Popkes (b. 25 December 1772 at Oldehove, d. soon after 1830) took the family name of Gaaikema as did many of his relatives. This was the ancestor on the maternal side, the paternal ancestor being Harm Gaaikema, a farmer at de Waarden near Grijpskerk. In the 1950s two descendants, brothers, were Mennonite pastors: Harm H. Gaaikema, b. 1904 at Noordhorn, who first studied law and then theology, serving the congregations of Dantumawoude 1935-1946 and Harlingen 1946- ; and Menno J. J. Gaaikema, b. 1909 at Noordhorn, serving Uithuizen 1933-1947 and Zijldijk 1947-   .
