Adriaen Willemsz, an Anabaptist martyr, was beheaded at Vianen in the Dutch province of South Holland on 22 March 1569. He was captured in his house on the night of 4 April 1568. Much effort was made to have Adriaen return to the Roman Church. Repeatedly, and even after he had been sentenced, he was visited in his cell by monks who "sought to rob him of his faith," but Adriaen remained steadfast and died "with a willing heart, retaining his faith." In contrast to most of the martyrs, he was well-treated and did not have to endure any torture. According to tradition, Adriaen, during his imprisonment of nearly a year, produced various writings, which were lost at the time of a flood in February 1571.
