Mariken (Marrijtgen) Jansdochter, an Anabaptist martyr, sentenced to death on 21 August 1552, at Leiden, Dutch province of South Holland, to be burned at the stake if she persisted in error and to be buried alive if she recanted. She did not forsake her faith and in consequence she was burned; when she was standing on the execution place, she said to the bystanders, "There is no other way to salvation," and she died with the words of Stephen (Acts 7:59), "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Mariken Jansdochter, together with a few other martyrs put to death at Leiden in 1552, is celebrated in a hymn composed by Adriaen Cornelisz, beginning "Eylaes ick mach wel suchten" (Alas, I must make complaint), found both in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren (No. 18) and Nieu Liedenboeck of 1562. Perhaps the martyr, who is also called Mariken and is named in hymn No. 6 of the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, is identical with Mariken Jansdochter.
