Arnold Meshovius (1591-1667), professor at the University of Cologne, wrote a book in 1617 about the Anabaptists: Historia Anabaptistica, Libri septem. He was an orthodox Catholic and the intention of the book is to "frighten Catholics away from the pestilence of these disgusting people," and "confirm them in the faith, in the doctrine, and in the practices of the Catholic Church more and more." A glance at his sources—Ambrosius Blaurer, Bullinger, Cochläus, Oecolampadius, Luther, Zwingli, Melanchthon, etc.—shows that this is a piece of propaganda. Anabaptists are revolutionaries; he discusses Karlstadt, Thomas Müntzer, Hutten, the Münsterites, and ends with the year 1536. He has nothing to say about the peaceful Anabaptists. The book was given recognition by the Catholic Church and was probably the basis for suspicions against the Mennonites in Polish Prussia. The author announced the planned continuation of his book to cover the period 1536-1618, likewise in seven books. Apparently he did not get this done.
