Jeronimus (Jeronymus van der Capellen or Jerosme de la Chapelle) was an Anabaptist martyr who burned at the stake at Antwerp, Belgium on 22 May 1557. Jeronimus was a native of Brussels; by trade he was a maker of tin pots. He lived at Ghent, Belgium, with his wife Margriete. Here in 1555 their marriage was performed "according to the customs of the Mennonites." From Ghent they fled to Antwerp, where, both being Mennonites, they hoped to live more safely. But soon they were arrested and both sentenced to death, Margriete being executed about six weeks after her husband on 5 July 1557. They died loyally; their names are celebrated in the hymn "Aenhoort Godt, hemelsche Vader" (Hear, God, heavenly Father), found in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren. Jeronimus' property was confiscated and sold.
