Hanserd Knollys Society was named for an English Particular Baptist leader, Hansard Knollys (1599- 1691). It was organized in 1845 in London for "the publication of the works of early English and other Baptist writers" and ceased in 1855 after issuing 10 unnumbered volumes. For Mennonites the Society, in part, focused attention on an Anabaptist tract and translated into English a significant portion of the 1660 and 1685 Dutch editions of Tieleman J. van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror. The Hanserd Knollys Society first volume was with Edward B. Underhill as editor: Tracts on Liberty of Conscience and Persecution, 1614-1661, London, Hanserd Knollys Soc., 402pp. 1846. This volume held as its fifth tract: “The humble petition and representation of the Anabaptists (of Kent imprisoned at Maidstone),” which was first published in 1660. In 1850 it published, as volume 1 of the book titled: A martyrology of the churches of Christ, commonly called Baptists, during the era of the Reformation. London, England. This is an English translation of pp. 1-371 of the second part of the second Dutch edition of 1685 of Tieleman J. van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror, edited by Edward Bean Underhill. Then in 1853 it followed with the publishing of volume 2 with the same title work but now the translation was by Benjamin Millard and was from the Dutch preface and martyr stories from volume 2 of Bracht's Martyrs' Mirror, which were published in the first edition of 1660. This second volume also held some illustrations copies of some of plates by Jan Luiken which illustrate the 1685 Dutch edition.
