Christian Schmidt (1833-1906), an elder of the [[Mennonite Brethren Church|Mennonite Brethren]] in [[Russia|Russia]], was born at Constantinograd in 1833. He was a cabinetmaker by trade, and lived in Tokmak in 1864. In the church he opposed the "Ueberfröhlichen," presented to the councillor Brun on 6 December 1865, an important document, the <em>Selbstbekenntnis</em> (Confession of faith), which contains exact information on the Mennonite Brethren. In 1872 he was appointed traveling evangelist with Jakob Jantz, and published an account of the journey in a yearbook the two founded in 1865.
