Pieter Huisinga Bakker, b. 24 March 1713, d. 22 October 1801, married Elisabeth Wagenaar in 1749. He was the son of a Mennonite family and a Collegiant. An exporter by trade, he was also a poet, writing his Poëzy in three parts (Amsterdam 1773, 1782, 1790). He also translated the writings of John Milton (1608-74). In 1768 he was named a member of the Dutch Literary Society, founded in Leiden in 1766, in whose Werken (works) he published a remarkable study of Dutch poetry titled Beschouwing van den ouden gebrekkelyken en sedert verbeterden trant onzer Nederduitsche versen (vol. 5 [1781], pp. 83-130). The biography, Het leven van Jan Wagenaar, beneevens eenige brieven van en aan denzelven ( Amsterdam, 1776), of his brother-in-law and well-known Collegiant, remains of enduring significance. He was a descendant of the Huizinga family and was the first to publish a genealogy of this family, entitled Stamboek of Geslachtsregister van Derk Pieters en Katrina Thomas (Groningen, 1775).
