Jan Evertsz van Wij of Amsterdam, an Anabaptist martyr, was beheaded at Amsterdam on 31 December 1534. He had been baptized by Jacob van Campen after he had not attended the Catholic Church for a number of years. He was in prison for about six weeks. The city government tried to protect him from capital punishment, but they were apparently compelled by the Court of Holland to put him to death. He seems to have belonged to the revolutionary type of Anabaptism.
