Gielis van Aerde, an Anabaptist martyr, born at Lier (Belgium), was taken prisoner together with Govert Mertens, Marie Vlaminx, and Tanneken van Roosbroecke. After a severe cross-examination on the rack, in which he publicly confessed his faith, he was hanged and burned at Lier on 31 January 1551 (not 1550; see Offer 569, note). Hans de Vette, who witnessed their execution, composed a song about these four martyrs of Lier, that starts with the words: "Als men schreef duyst vijfhondert" (Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, No. 17).
