Isaac A. Sommer was born near [[Dalton (Ohio, USA)|Dalton, Ohio]], the son of Abraham and Elizabeth Sommer, on 17 January 1851. He attended the [[Wadsworth Mennonite School (Wadsworth, Ohio, USA)|Wadsworth school]] for a total of four years, serving as a schoolteacher 1869-1884 when not in school. In the spring of 1884 he worked for the Mennonite Publishing Company at Elkhart, Indiana. In the fall of the same year he was appointed editor of the Christlicher Bundesbote, the official organ of the General Conference Mennonite Church, serving until 1911.
