Schellinger, a Mennonite family, now extinct, found at Amsterdam, Holland, in the 17th and 18th centuries; they were usually ironmongers and in the 18th century came to great prosperity. Some members of this family belonged to the Old Frisian (Arke Noach) Mennonites at Amsterdam, among whom was Abraham Pieters Schellinger, who was a preacher of this church 1718-d.66. Members of the family were found in the Jan-Jacobsz, Lamist, Zonist, and (in the 17th century) Waterlander congregations. A few members of this family were warmly interested in the Herrnhuter (Moravian) Brotherhood and some joined them at Zeist, as did Jacob Schellinger (b. 1706) and his brother Cornelis. Both were members of the Amsterdam Lamist church and were won over to the Herrnhuters by Johannes Deknatel, the Lamist minister, who was a warm friend of the Herrnhuters.
