Jacob ter Meulen, b. 3 December 1884, at The Hague, Holland, a Dutch Mennonite, married to Wilhelmina Bosboom, studied history and was librarian of the Peace Palace at The Hague 1924-1952. He is particularly known for his publications on the Dutch Pacifist Hugo de Groot (Grotius), collaborating with P. J. J. Diermanse in publishing Bibliographie des écrits imprimés de Hugo Grotius (The Hague, 1950). He was one of the first Dutch pacifists and an active member of the Mennonite Peace Association (Arbeidsgroep tegen de Krijgsdienst). Jacob ter Meulen is the son of François Pieter ter Meulen (1843-1927) and Augusta Wijnaendts. François Pieter ter Meulen, after studying Latin and Greek, lived at The Hague and became a painter; he was an active president of the painters' association Pulchri Studio.
