Hatano Eichiro, the first moderator of the Nihon Menonaito Kirisuto Kyokai Kaigi (Hokkaido) (Japan Mennonite Christian Church Conference) and a lay pastor of the Shiroishi congregation, was born 16 August 1899 in Hokkaido. As a student he entered the medical department of Keio University in Tokyo, but left after studying for four years. On returning to Kushiro, his home town, he worked for a local newspaper as a reporter for eight years. When his father died in 1932, the hereditary system settled him as postmaster, and he stayed in that position until he retired at the age of 68.

In 1951 he and his wife, Katsuko, met Ralph and Genevieve Buckwalter for the first time. They were baptized two years later. While managing the post office, he helped with the Buckwalter's missionary work in and around Kushiro.

In 1956 when the Japan Mennonite Christian Church Conference was established, he showed good leadership as chairman in coordinating the local churches for 12 years. After retiring from post office work in 1967, he attended Goshen Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, IN, as an auditor. In 1968 he became lay pastor of the Shiroishi church in Sapporo and served faithfully for about 10 years.
