Christian R. Egle (1858-1926), for many years pastor and elder of the [[Salem Evangelical Mennonite Church (Gridley, Illinois, USA)|Salem Defenseless Mennonite Church]] near Gridley, [[Livingston County (Illinois, USA)|Livingston County]], [[Illinois (USA)|Illinois]], was the son of [[Amish Mennonites|Amish Mennonite]] parents, Christian and Maria (Rediger) Egle. Born in Württemberg, [[Germany|Germany]], he came to America in 1874 to avoid military service. Although he had been baptized at the age of 15 in the Amish Mennonite church at [[Zweibrücken (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)|Zweibrücken]], [[Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany)|Palatinate]], Germany, he experienced a religious awakening in 1878 while attending the revival meetings conducted by [[Egly, Henry (1824-1890)|Henry Egly]], founder of the [[Fellowship of Evangelical Churches|Defenseless Mennonite Church]]. In June 1879 he was rebaptized and joined the Defenseless congregation at Gridley, Illinois In June 1883 he was elected by ballot to the ministry of his congregation and 10 years later was ordained elder. After the death of [[Rediger, Joseph (1826-1904)|Joseph Rediger]], the elder of Salem, Egle was chosen as the Salem elder, a position he held until his death. In December 1891 he was married to Bena Augermeier. Egle was editor of the <em>Heils-Bote </em>throughout its entire history (1898-1917). For several years he also printed the publication.

Christian R.
