Bernhard (Bernhardus) Buwo was a Reformed minister in East Friesland, Germany, during the time of the Reformation. Little was known about him until Walter Hollweg published an article, "Bernhard Buwo, ein ostfriesischer Theologe aus dem Reformationsjahrhundert," in Jahrbuch der Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst und vaterländische Altertümer zu Emden (Aurich, 1953). In 1556 Buwo published a book in Low German against the Anabaptists entitled Een frundtlyke thosamensprekenge van twee personen, von der Döpe der yungen unmundigen Kynderen ... (Emden, 1556). The following year a Dutch edition of this book appeared (Emden, 1557), which was followed by a third edition in 1564 and a fourth, revised edition published in Ghent in 1580. In 1563 a German edition followed, translated by Engelbert Faber. Buwo, who (according to Hollweg) was himself influenced by the Anabaptists, used peaceful means in his attempt to win them to the Reformed Church.
