Hans de Vette, an Anabaptist martyr, was executed at Ghent, 5 July 1559. With his wife and eleven other Anabaptists, including Hans de Smet, he was thrown into prison at Ghent on Friday after Pentecost in 1559, when their meeting had been betrayed. They were executed on different days. All remained true to their faith. Hans de Vette wrote a "confession" in prison, in which he describes his trial in detail. Hans was a native of Waastene (Warneton) in West Flanders, and a dyer by trade. His wife Miertgen was executed on 27 June 1560. A song on Hans is found in Offer der Heeren, which begins "Hebt goeden moet, o broeders van weerden." A hymn commemorating the whole group is found in the Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren (No. 14), "Ick moet een liet beginnen."
