Vermande (Vermander, Vermandele, Van (der) Mander), a widely ramified Dutch family, formerly Mennonite. This family is of Flemish descent, emigrating from Flanders, Belgium, to Holland because of persecution. Gerrit and Hans Vermandele were Anabaptist martyrs, both executed at Antwerp, Belgium, in 1569. Carel Vermander (1548-1606), a noted poet and painter, moved from Flanders to Haarlem, where he was a member of the Old Flemish congregation. In the early 17th century the Mennonite Vermandeles lived near Aardenburg in Dutch Zeeland Flanders and some Vermanders at Amsterdam. Vermandes were in the 17th century found among the members of the Mennonite congregations in Haarlem, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Delft. Some of them were deacons: Lewys Jacobs Vermande served in the Flemish congregation of Rotterdam from 1641; Isaac Jacobs Vermande represented Delft at the Flemish conference at Leiden in 1660, and in 1664 signed the Verbondt van Eenigheydt for Delft. In Amsterdam they were members of the Zonist church. They were all businessmen, some of them, particularly at Amsterdam, very wealthy; e.g., Lodewijk Vermande (1676-1748) of Amsterdam, who in 1716 married Maria Welsingh. They had only one surviving daughter (Maria Alletta 1726-79, married to Hendrik Pieter van Beeck), and this branch died out with her. The Haarlem branch also died out in the 18th century. The members of the Rotterdam and Delft branches, and a side branch at Hoorn, all left the Mennonite Church about 1700. At present there are no Mennonite Vermandes.
