Jan Hendricksen (Hendriksz), from Zwartewaal, Dutch province of South Holland, an Anabaptist martyr, living at Delfshaven near Rotterdam, the steersman of a herring-drifter, was burned at the stake at Delft, Dutch province of South Holland, on 5 February 1572, with Maerten Jansz Corendrager. He was held in prison for more than a year. While in prison he wrote a moving letter of farewell to his wife, urging her to continue faithfully in the doctrine. He wrote in a similar vein to Maerten Jansz, his fellow prisoner, and also to his brother and sister. His report of his repeated cross-examinations shows an amazing knowledge of the Bible and a firmness of faith not usual in an unlettered man.
